The idea
I began the drawing after visiting Shangri-La. I wanted to compose a scene about people and nature living in harmony, bringing a woman and a resting rhinoceros into the same quiet landscape of mountains, trees, and open sky.
One dot at a time
I drew the image without using lines. Over three months, individual dots accumulated into edges, volume, light, and depth; varying the density of the dots created the tonal transitions that hold the figures and landscape together.
